Mapping seafloor features provides crucial information for a number of coastal and marine spatial planning applications. Seafloor maps can be used to help identify critical habitat areas for benthic organisms (e.g. clams, corals, demersal fish), select appropriate offshore construction sites, and plan sand/gravel mining operations. Seafloor maps may also contain critical information on geohazards or sensitive archaeological areas to avoid. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) can use this information when managing Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) non-energy mineral resources in order to ensure that the removal and relocation of sand is conducted in a safe and environmentally sound manner, and that any potentially adverse impacts on the marine, coastal, or human environments are avoided or minimized. |

The Seabed Feature Pnt (point) layer contains points representing geologic, biologic, and anthropogenic geoforms in the coastal and marine environment that have been classified based on geoform component definitions outlined in the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS, FGDC-STD-018-2012, June 2012). These features help provide context for exploring relationships between the physical environment and biological community distribution. These features were compiled from multiple investigators and projects whose research on or around the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) was funded fully or partially by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). Attribution includes, but is not limited to, state, date, feature ID and description, physical attributes, data source and study ID. Additional information related to groups of features is provided in the related Link Documents table. This dataset will be updated regularly as new and existing data are incorporated in to the Marine Minerals Information System geodatabase. |
